With the arrival of winter come frozen floors. The preventive salt that is poured onto the streets significantly lowers the possibility of slipping, but does not eliminate it altogether. That is why we must keep in mind a series of safety tips to avoid falls in winter.

  1. Wear appropriate shoes. Slippery soles will make it harder for you to walk through areas filled with snow & ice. Put on shoes with non-slip soles.
  2. Look where you walk. Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. If a surface looks slippery, strike the tip of your shoe before passing over it. Be especially careful with dark floors, as it is harder to detect ice on these floors. Walk slowly, running or jumping makes it much easier to lose control of your steps.
  3. Keep your balance. Keep your hands free to help maintain balance. If there are handrails, use them. Try to avoid carrying heavy packages on ice-filled stairs, and do not load packages that prevent you from seeing where you are walking.
  4. Do not let clothes prevent you from seeing clearly. You need to stay warm, but don’t wear a balaclava, scarf, hat or hood that limits your vision.
  5. Beware of falling ice. Icicles falling on you can cause serious injuries. Avoid walking under the edges of buildings.

If you have suffered a fall, we highly recommend visiting a physiotherapist. A physiotherapist contributes to the rehabilitation process after a fall. This is achieved through massages and exercises that help strengthen muscles, improve mobility and joint stability, reduce muscle stiffness, and increase balance.

If you’re in need of physiotherapy within the Rexdale area, head over to Revitamax Rehab & Wellness. Our physiotherapists serve the people of Etobicoke, Rexdale and Malton. Call 416-360-8326 to book your complimentary consultation.
