Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that occurs as a result of an injury to the peripheral nervous system, which is constituted by an extensive network of nerves distributed throughout the body which transmit sensitive information to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and other parts of the body. In addition, they fulfill a motor function that allows limb movement. It is estimated that in the United States, more than 20 million people suffer from this pathology.

Peripheral neuropathy can be inherited or acquired through disease processes (diabetes, hypothyroidism, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, among others) or trauma. However, in many cases, a specific cause cannot be identified.

People who suffer from peripheral neuropathy usually have pain, tingling, numbness and weakness of the limbs. There are many treatments that help to alleviate these symptoms; however, many patients require complementary measures to pharmacological treatment to relieve the discomfort caused by this disorder. Compressive stockings are a useful tool for this type of patient.

Compression stockings are elastic garments that are worn around the legs in order to exert a contraction of the venous system which improves blood flow. This is achieved because the pressure exerted by compression stockings is greater around the ankle and decreases as the stocking rises through the leg. This effect helps relieve the burning sensation, cramping, and discomfort that often accompanies peripheral neuropathy.

The best way to put on the compression stockings is to gently pass the extended and unrolled stocking through the foot until the heel is covered. Then, the rest of the stocking is raised by the leg until reaching the indicated height. Once the stockings are on, check that the seams run straight through the leg and that the stockings are not piled up or wrinkled anywhere, especially at the ankles.

It is important to keep in mind that nerves are fragile structures and very important for the proper functioning of the organism. Therefore, they require rigorous care and before implementing any treatment, it is best to consult with your doctor.
