Carrying multiple heavy objects on your back and shoulders all day has a negative impact on your spine which can lead to the following:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Slouching
  • Breathing problems
  • Numbness in neck, back and shoulders

High school and college students are at the highest risk of getting back problems due to the amount of textbooks and other personal belongings being carried against their backs and spines all day, which can lead to the long-term problems stated above.

How Do I Carry All My Belongings With Me Without Hurting My Back?

Bags are one of the most useful things on the planet, so they’re not out of the question. But, the type of bag being used is what matters.

Opt for backpacks over messenger and shoulder bags. Backpacks evenly distribute the weight of your belongings throughout the entire back. One sided-sling bags add extra weight to one side, making the distribution uneven and can cause pain and discomfort. Make sure to pack lightly as much as possible. Try to carry some of your belongings in your hands and evenly spread out your belongings inside of the bag, using the pockets and other compartments with the heaviest items closest to your back. Adjust the straps on your backpack to have the bag lay against the middle of the back or purchase a bag that comes with a waist belt for extra support.
