The menisci are structures made up of cartilage in the knee that act to absorb force, which is especially important during walking or running. Although they absorb force, meniscal injuries are one of the most common types of injuries to the knee.

Direct injuries to the menisci are commonly caused by compression and rotational forces on a flexed weight-bearing knee, resulting in lesions. However, menisci injuries can also occur as a result of age-related degeneration due to constant weight-bearing. Both causes can produce knee instability and make everyday tasks like walking or climbing stairs painful.

As the inner part of menisci do not typically receive blood, healing is significantly slower and tends to be limited to the outer area. Furthermore, the presence of lesions in the menisci can also increase the likelihood of developing osteoarthritis of the knee.

Common signs of a meniscal lesion include tenderness of the knee, popping sounds during flexion and extension of the knee, and intermittent pain. Injuries to the menisci can also occur alongside ruptures to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial cruciate ligament (MCL), then being known as the terrible triad of the knee. Rehab for meniscal lesions may differ depending on the patient’s circumstances and may include acupuncture, manual therapy, laser therapy, various modalities, rehabilitative exercises, and more.
