Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common reasons one experiences foot pain. It is caused by the deterioration or inflammation of the plantar fascia located at the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia is an import part of the structure of the foot as it provides proper biomechanics as well as support the arch and absorb shocks placed on it when doing activities such as walking or running.

The main symptom is an intense, chronic pain at the bottom of the foot that feels like an ache or bruise, typically around the heel area. Plantar fasciitis can be at its worst first thing in the morning and when you get up after sitting for a long time. The pain may subside after walking for a bit around, but as it is a chronic condition it is likely to return as time goes on, especially at the end of the day.

Spending an increased amount of time on one’s feet, excess force being absorbed caused activities such as running, and being overweight can cause plantar fasciitis to develop within a person. In addition, having tight calf muscles, flat feet, high arches or wearing improper footwear can lead to plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis can be quickly diagnosed by a trained medical professional and sometimes does not require the use of an MRI.

Plantar fasciitis can be managed through a variety of ways. Typically, a way to provide the patient with some relief would be prescribing them custom foot orthotics. Strengthening and stretching muscles such as the calves and the Achilles tendon. Mobility of the ankle and toes is another great way to reduce the pain.
