What is it?

Tendonitis is a medical condition that affects the tendons. Tendons are the structures in your body that attach muscles to bone and allow for movement when the muscle contracts. An individual with tendonitis has inflammation of their tendon or group of tendons which results in irritation and inflammation. This can also be experienced as pain just outside the joint of the affected tendon.

Causes:

Injury to the tendon is commonly influenced by jobs, activities, or sports that require consistent repetitive movements or overuse; this could include repetitively using screwdrivers or tools that require rotation of the wrist. Improper technique is also a risk factor for these injuries as it results in positioning/moving in a way that the body was not designed to work in.

What does it feel like?

The pain associated with these conditions are frequently described as dull aching, especially when moving the limb or joint that is affected; This pain may be accompanied by tenderness and swelling.

Common Areas Affected:

The most common areas affected are the major joints of the human skeleton; shoulder, elbow, wrist, knees and ankle.

Tennis Elbow: Also known as lateral epicondylitis, this injury is caused by damage to the common extensor origin (the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus). It is known as tennis elbow because swinging a racket requires constantly having to extend the arm out straight with supination. Therefore, because this sport requires this repetitive movement while in a match and when training, it is common to see this injury in tennis players.

Golfers Elbow: Also known as medial epicondylitis, this injury is caused by damage to the common flexor origin (the tendons that attach to the medial epicondyle of the humerus). This injury is referred to as golfers elbow because swinging a golf club requires repetitive flexion and pronation (palm facing down), again the repetitive nature of the golf swing while playing golf results in these athletes being predisposed to this injury.

Other Sports and Occupations to look out for:

  • Baseball (elbow tendons)
  • Basketball (shoulder/knee tendons)
  • Bowling (elbow tendons)
  • Running (knee tendons)
  • Swimming (shoulder tendons/swimmers shoulder)
  • Construction/plumbing (wrist/elbow tendons)

When to Get Treatment and Why to choose Revitamax Rehab?

If irritation has persisted for 7 weeks or longer you have an increased risk of developing tendonitis; this can include degenerative changes to the tendon itself along with abnormal blood vessel formation.

Revitamax Facility is a place where you will feel welcome and at home! Our goal is to improve the bodies functioning using the best of techniques. The practices at your service are here to make a lasting change and get to the root of the problem, not cover up the issue with temporary relief.

Avoiding treatment implies increasing the risk of a tendon rupture which in many cases results in the need for surgery. This would keep you off your feet longer and generally increase the amount of pain from recovering from the medical procedure.

Services Revitamax Provides for Tendonitis:

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is a technique that uses small needles to stimulate the factors involved with tendon healing.

Electrostimulation:

Electrostimulation is often combined with acupuncture to promote collagen repair. This combination has proven effective in reducing pain and swelling.

Ultrasound:

This device can be used for more chronic tendon issues to help with pain and tendon healing quicker. If tendon pain has been experienced for longer than 3 months the risks of scar tissue are increased. The high-frequency sound waves of this device may be the perfect option to help remove this scar tissue and release one’s pain.
